IBMAN @ Hugo Boss

There was recently the Berlin Fashion Week sponsored by Mercedes. One of our fellow students, Robert Bartels, walked for Hugo Boss. Robert Bartels is probably a name we should remember in the future. The newcomer won the casting for Hugo Boss on facebook and was honoured to walk next to models like Toni Garrn or Lars Burmeister. It was a very competitive contest and the Boss Art designer picked our study mate which fitted best into the show.

Good relations play an important role in the open market. Because every IBMAN has to do an internship in his 7th semester, Robert might have the chance to do it at Hugo Boss – what a chance! We created a little video about Robert Bartels at the Berlin Fashion week but see yourself!

Visit the HWR

As promised we’d like to give you some detailed and special insider facts about our course “International Business Management” and our university.

g

Well here we go… you have just seen a little introductory video of or uni, it was very high speed – but that’s how you need to be today to adapt the modern business world. You may not have been able to count the steps but there are only 117 steps upstairs which will take you to the the roof top sun terrace in the 5th level and our cafeteria with a changing menu every week. The smokers of you will be relieved because you can not officially smoke there but everyone does it on the terrace anyway. Another positive aspect for all of you is that you can sunbathe a bit in summertime and get a good overview over Schöneberg.

g

For the active and sportive ones of you there are even 84 bicycle stands in front of the uni – nearly never they are all occupied which will definitely motivate you to grab your bike in the summer month instead of taking the underground.

gg

If you want to send a letter to your family, friends or a future employer one day there is also a post box only 33meters away. Very convenient!

For the coffee junkies among you the next stop to fulfil your needs is just 54 steps away – the “vis-à-vis” across the street is the location for every occasion. The staff there is friendly and they’ll serve you delicious drinks and meals.

You’ll see there is something for every one of you and even though the university is a rather smaller one it definitely has its charm as well.

Interview with Prof. Dr. Birkenkrahe

Prof. Dr. Birkenkrahe is our lecturer in the current, second semester and teaches the subject “Business Application”. (Exactly the subject in which we were taught to create the HIBMAN-blog!)

At the HWR Berlin he has generally been teaching since April 2007. Since the very beginning he has appreciated the climate of confidence between lecturers and students at our university.

Prof. Dr. Birkenkrahe gained international experience throughout his entire life:

On the one hand that became apparent by his studies which were spread over numerous continents like Netherlands, Argentina, Switzerland, the United States and England. On the other hand it became obvious by his living and working experience in faraway countries and foreign cultures like New Zealand. …impressive – since he’s only 28 years old today! (watch the video for further explanation!)

But for now there’s only one thing left to say:

Thank you Mr.Birkenkrahe for making this interview with us, it was a pleasure to work with you during the semester!

Christmas Party

I hope everybody had a wonderful Christmas with friends and family! Like every year the HWR Christmas party was a big success and we had a lot of fun. This year our school band had its debut and believe me they really rocked. What else do you need for a good party then: good music, friends and a cup of some hot wine. Everybody brought something to eat and after a while it got really crowded. As it got later everybody started dancing on the tables. As you can see we had an amazing time. We are looking forward to the next Christmas party. Every year the third semester has to organise the official Christmas party so next year it’s our turn. You should watch the video to get an impression of this wonderful night.

This is an interview with Mrs Philipose, who is a teacher at the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR).

She originally comes from India and studied ‚Comparative Literature’ in the United States. In 1989 Mrs Philipose came to Germany and since two years she has been teaching the course ‚Self Management’ at the HWR.

This subject gives students the opportunity to evaluate their soft skills, which is necessary for future business managers at the very beginning of their studies. The course is focused on the need that students understand their strengths and weaknesses.

All in all, she likes the HWR, especially the International Business Management program, with the IBMAN students, who she finds very talented and individual. What a nice compliment!

Thank you very much, Mrs Philipose for having given us this interview!

Cookies for Africa

d

As you have certainly realised the blog “HIBMAN” provides all necessary information about our study course “International Business Mangagement” at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. But – due to that fact – isn´t it a bit strange that our blog also includes a category named “charity” or a video named “Cookies for Africa”? NO it isn´t! …and we will explain you why:

s

Before Katha, one student of our group, began her studies in Berlin she worked for eight months in Senegal, West Africa. Besides teaching at an African nursery and primary school she also assisted an health-organisation called “GRAIF” for several months. Even though she´s back in Germany now the memory of the time in Senegal and even more the willingness to improve the situation there is still important for her. As a result of that our group decided to make cookies during the Christmas time and afterwards to offer them in the foyer of our university for an optional amount of money. All the donations were send to the health-organisation “GRAIF”. The organisation distributes mosquito nets during the prime time of malaria infection or builds fountains in dry areas of West Africa – just to mention a few of their challenges. If you are further interested in the work of this health-organisation we can recommend you to visit the following homepage.

s

Now to have the facts speak for themselves: We made around 900 Christmas cakes, packed around 110 packages, needed around 13 hours for preparation AND … made accuately 305 euros!! A great amount of money for a country like Senegal! A great Christmas present for the Senegalese people who could never afford a mosquito net on their own!

Partner Institutions

Partner universities are universities with which the HWR Berlin has signed a cooperation agreement. These agreements allow students of the HWR Berlin to study abroad without incurring the usual tuition fees.
These partnerships are usually dependent on a balanced trade relationship with foreign students. This means that the study opportunities at partner institutions must be matched annually
by the International Office. You find a detailed list of all partner universities on the following website.

Free Mover

If you want to study at a university which is not a partner institution you can study abroad a “Free Mover”.
“Free Movers” are students who organize their study abroad themself. You can, in principle apply at any university worldwide, however you do not benefit from the advantages of a cooperation agreement.
To arrange a stay abroad at a university outside of the cooperation program of the HWR Berlin itself, students must be independently set with the chosen host institution in conjunction. For financing this project there are various options available, such as a scholarship by the DAAD. To have your service performed abroad recognised after returning to the HWR Berlin, you must have completed a Lerning Agreement with your responsible ECTS-Coordinator in each case.

In October 2009, we celebrated the second anniversary of our Bachelor’s course International Business Management.

e

Created by Prof. Dr. Haller, the first group of IBMAN (def.: someone who’s studying International Business Management) was granted admission in 2007. Since then, the HWR welcomes 35 to 40 new students every semester.

e

The idea of connecting business competencies with complementary language skills and intercultural capabilities, caught the spirit of our time. Throughout the following years 200 IBMAN began their studies at HWR Berlin. Once the programme has run up, there’ll be about 280 students taking part in the programme.

e

Due to the limited number of students accepted to the programme, IBMAN derive profit from small learning groups, a strong sense of community and a healthy pinch of competition.

e

Tongue – in – cheek: even though we are all called IBMAN, 73 % of us are women. In fact, the latest IBMAN generation started with only three male students.
